72 million Americans have high blood pressure.
Tom’s Story
Expectant grandfather takes medications to keep high cholesterol and blood pressure in check
Heart disease has always been a part of Tom Filmore’s life. His father died from cardiac thrombosis – a blood clot in the heart – when Tom was only nine years old. Says Tom: “For a long time, I believed I would die before my 50th birthday.”
Tom is 62. And he feels great.
“In my 20s, I began researching heart disease. In my 30s, I learned that I had high cholesterol and high blood pressure,” says Tom, a computer consultant and avid gamer. “These days I monitor my body for changes. I look at getting blood tests like changing the oil in a car. You do it every three months, without exception.”
Tom is also meticulous about taking the various medications his cardiologist prescribes for controlling his cholesterol and blood pressure levels. “The medications are doing a wonderful job,” he says. “My doctors say that I am doing very well despite significant risk factors. I’m optimistic.”
Such optimism, combined with an infectious sense of humor and a wonderful family, contribute to his continued good health. He and his wife recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first grandchild.
